If you’re trying to break into the world of freelance writing, it helps to know where to go. If non-fiction is what you’re interested, there may be more hoops to jump through; for example if you plan to have any articles on science published in a magazine such as Discover, you may need to have it go through a peer review. One thing to remember is that the standards may be higher depending on the magazine.
A great way to break into the business is websites such as Elance, and flexjobs. They will have writing jobs for you to get experience, if you’re new to writing. The topics may not be what you’re familiar with, but the experience will help you grow as a writer, and prepare you for future work. Third Party websites are also good if you’re interested in tech writing, which many writers take while they’re pursuing their work in creative writing.
When you start out, there is the possibility you will need to take some jobs for free. I would advise you take them, you can use them on your resume, and employers are drawn to people who have done some volunteer work, and you never know what contacts you might make.
