If you’re trying to break into the world of freelance writing, it helps to know where to go. There are plenty of jobs out there for new writers, and whatever topic you want to write about there is a place you can go to: jobs like this helps many writers who are looking to find jobs in journalism, or are simply trying to get their first book published. Where do you go? Here are some things to remember:

  • What do you like to write about
  • What are good third party websites
  • Do you need to take some jobs for free

What do you like to write about?

This is the first basic question. Do you like to write fiction, or non-fiction? If it is fiction what is the format:

  • Mystery
  • Science Fiction
  • Horror
  • Historical
  • Romance

If it is non-fiction what is the format:

  • Science
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Sociology

If any of these topics are what you’re drawn to, there are outlets, some online, and some printed where you can look for publishing, for Mystery some magazines:

  • The Strand
  • New Mystery Reader

These magazines could be used for stories, or reviews of the latest books. The same can be said for the other formats listed above.

If non-fiction is what you’re interested, there may be more hoops to jump through; for example if you plan to have any articles on science published in a magazine such as Discover, you may need to have it go through a peer review. One thing to remember is that the standards may be higher depending on the magazine.

What are good third party websites

A great way to break into the business is websites such as Elance, and flexjobs. They will have writing jobs for you to get experience, if you’re new to writing. The topics may not be what you’re familiar with, but the experience will help you grow as a writer, and prepare you for future work. Third Party websites are also good if you’re interested in tech writing, which many writers take while they’re pursuing their work in creative writing.

Free Jobs

When you start out, there is the possibility you will need to take some jobs for free. I would advise you take them, you can use them on your resume, and employers are drawn to people who have done some volunteer work, and you never know what contacts you might make.
